4 Tips for Getting a Great Night's SleepFor some of us, getting a good night’s sleep can be a real challenge and it may seem that we toss and turn more than actually sleeping. A good night’s sleep is just as important as eating well and exercising daily. Without it, we feel irritable and cranky throughout the day. Here are 4 tips that we hope you will find helpful for getting a great night’s sleep.

1. Put away the electronics

Some of us are so glued to our phones that we can’t even put them away when it’s time for bed. Same with the television. Watching TV and looking at your phone only cause stimulation of the brain, making it more difficult to drift off to bed. Just turn everything off. It can be a good idea to put your phone a distance away to discourage you from looking at it when you’re having trouble getting to sleep. If you just can’t seem to put your phone down, try turning it on night mode or reducing the blue light exposure. If you aren’t sure how to do this, google “Blue Light Setting on [my phone]”.

2. Get a comfortable mattress

We spend half our life sleeping which means our mattress is one of the most important things you own. You need to be comfortable in order to drift off to dreamland. If your mattress is old and worn out, or uncomfortable then it may be time to shop for a new one. There are a number of options out there. You may opt for a Tempur-Pedic, a Sleep Number, or a memory foam mattress. Try them all out at the Mattress Store to see what one you like the best. If you are unsure, opt for one that has a return policy of 30-60 days so if you don’t like it once you get it home and have slept on it for a few days, you can return it and buy a different one!

3. Avoid naps, stay active

Some of us take a nap in the middle of the day to give us a boost of energy. However, this could be hurting our ability to sleep at night. Fight through it and force yourself to stay up. Take a walk, talk to a friend, move around. If you sit at a desk all day you may want to invest in a stand up desk that will help you stay more active and awake. Exercise in the morning to help energize you and eat smaller meals throughout the day so you won’t feel sleepy. By the end of the day you will be ready for your bed and will fall asleep quickly and sleep better through the night.

4. Go to a doctor

Some people have serious medical conditions that require more than counting sheep to help them get to sleep. Go to your doctor to explain your problem. They might have a solution in the form of a sleep study, a sleep apnea machine, or even medication. You need the right amount of sleep to be the best version of yourself, and your doctor may have some great suggestions or be able to help you get you there.
