It’s always best to properly prepare your home before winter begins to set in. With these 3 home maintenance tasks, you will find yourself ready for even the coldest weather. Remember, it is never too early (or late) to prepare your home for winter.

Wrap Your Pipes

Make sure you wrap your pipes in accordance with the temperatures in your area. You can find pipe insulation at any home improvement store, and make sure you ask for assistance if necessary. If you fail to wrap your pipes, then water will either freeze or cause your pipes to burst. Either path will leave you without water until your plumbing has been repaired or the freeze begins to thaw. If you are worried about your pipes freezing, then consider filling up your bathtub to ensure that you have plenty of water.

Have Your Heater and Ducts Inspected

Have a professional come out and ensure that your heater is ready for winter. It’s also a good idea to have them check your ducts as well, to make sure they are clean so you do not have a fire hazard on your hands. If you have a chimney, then it is wise to consider having your chimney prepared for winter. This will allow you the ability to warm your home even if you lose power.

Insulate Around Your Windows and Doors…and plugs!

Seal every nook and cranny around your windows and doors. You can find spray foam that will expand to seal large gaps, insulating tape for windows and doors, and draft blockers for the bottom of the door at any hardware store. You can also buy Wall Plate Insulation Gaskets and install them in your plug outlets and light switches. If you happen to lose electricity and can not heat your home, then consider tacking up blankets over the doorway to keep the warmth in one room. This helpful tip will help you make it through until your power is restored.
