What Is Hydrostatic Pressure?

Have you ever heard of hydrostatic pressure? Maybe you’ve heard of it while talking about your basement or foundation. Hydrostatic pressure exists when the soil around your home gets soaked with water. The soil expands and the water adds a great deal of weight. This wetter, heavier soil, will press on your foundation. The soil around your foundation is going to soak up water faster than soil that has been undisturbed and compacted for thousands of years in other areas of the property. Why? Because you can’t physically pack soil as tightly as nature and time can.
Once this pressure is up against your foundation, water will come in if it finds small fissures or cracks, opening around pipes, and even through the concrete itself, since concrete is porous. If the pressure is enough and there’s enough water, the water will actually fill the cavities of the block! The most common place for the leaks to come in is at the wall and floor joint. One of the easiest ways to stop this flooding is to install a perimeter drainage system along the edge of the basement floor that feeds towards a sump pump.
