As turf compacts into the ground all summer from mowing and activities, the roots eventually grow more at the surface, which makes lawns more prone to drought and pests. So, fall lawn aeration and overseeding is a good idea. Lawn aeration removes small cores of the soil across the lawn. This helps reduce soil compaction. It also helps new roots grow. Many lawn grasses will put out new roots in the fall, so it’s good to do soil aeration in September or October.
You can rent a machine for lawn aeration or you could ask your landscape company to do it. The results the next year make any investment worth it. You” end up with greater soil water uptake, reduced water uptake, reduced puddling and standing water, and strengthened roots.
It also helps allow for new grass seed to grow. So, after you’ve gone through the process of mechanically removing small plugs from around the lawn, you can go in and overseed with new grass seed.
If you find that the soil contains heavy clays, repeat the lawn aeration in the spring as well. Within a season or two, you’ll have healthier grass and a lawn with much more cushioning!
Remember, you don’t have to buy a lawn aerator for this process! You can rent them in many places, including at Sunbelt Rentals in Evansville or the Home Depot in Jasper!
