Is A Vented Crawl Space Creating High Utility Bills?

If your moving into a new home, be aware of vented crawl spaces. A vented crawl space can end up costing you a small fortune in utility bills if you don’t take some efforts to insulate it.
Check to make sure that fiberglass insulation isn’t installed in the crawl space ceiling. It actually will not protect you from cold floors, frozen pipes or high utility bills. Check for ductwork in the vented crawl space. This can make the ducts cold in the winter and really hot in the summer. This effect makes heating and cooling costs become excessive. It can actually cut efficiency by 25-40 percent.
So, what should you look for? Make sure that all rim joists in the crawl space are air sealed and insulated. Reduce conductive heat loss by using foam insulation at the rim joists after sealing all gaps around the perimeter. Then, insulate the crawl space walls with rigid foam. Fiberglass can’t stop air leaks, but rigid foam can. Plus, rigid foam doesn’t lose R-value and can’t absorb any moisture. Also, make sure that the crawl space floor is sealed an insulated too.
These simple steps can save you a bundle on your heating and cooling costs.
