Jasper resident’s water is provided by the Jasper Water Utility. Together, the Treatment and Distribution divisions provide water to around approximately 5,500 residential customers. The primary source of raw water is the Patoka River. This water is treated using an extensive process. The treatment process includes rapid mixing, coagulation, flocculation, settling, and rapid sand filtration.

Water Treatment

They add blended polymer flocculent, hydrated lime, chlorine, fluoride, activated carbon, and potassium permanganate to treat the water. It’s disinfected using a UV method to remove bacteria. Then, the water goes to a settling basin (Jasper has three). After that, the water flows to rapid sand filters. The sand filter 6.5 million gallons each day. After that, the water is pumped to elevated storage areas. There is waits for use!

The Patoka Reservoir is the main source of emergency water. Meanwhile, the Beaver Creek Reservoir is a secondary source of emergency water. If the city needs water from the Beaver Creek Reservoir, they release it into Beaver Creek. The extra water then flows into the Patoka River, where it can be taken into the municipal supply for treatment.
