Three Ways To Survive The Chaos Of Unpacking A House

Three Ways To Survive The Chaos Of Unpacking A House

Moving is an exciting time, filled with endless possibilities for new friends, new experiences, and a new life! But we also know it comes with more than a little bit of uncertainty and a lot of chaos. If you’re a person who loves organization, it may be particularly trying for you to survive the interim period when you’re not quite moved in a house. Chances are, when you arrive at your new location, you have many things to do, and all seem high-priority! It’s virtually impossible to get everything completely unpacked and organized in a day’s time and may not be possible for a couple of weeks – maybe you’re doing it alone, maybe you start work immediately, or any other number of factors which may cause you to live among the boxes. It’s not pleasant, but there are ways to make it bearable.

Three Ways To Survive The Chaos Of Unpacking A House

  • Unpack essentials immediately and place in dedicated area
  • Make a comfortable place to sleep a priority
  • Prioritize other things to unpack in order of importance

There are things we all need to live everyday – these may vary a bit from person to person, but most of us need access to water/food, a phone, medications, keys, important documents, toiletries, a jacket, money, etc. Place these things in a safe area so they are always available. As soon as you get to your new home, go out and make sure you have basics to stock your refrigerator – whatever that may be for you. Unpacking is hard work, so you may eat a little more than normal. You also may find you have need of old clothes/sturdier shoes, pain reliever such as ibuprofen, etc. Don’t forget hand soap, toilet paper, and a towel!

Your bed for the night should be a priority – you’re emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. If you don’t have enough time or manpower to set up the bed frame, that’s no problem. The box springs and mattress along with your favorite blankets and pillows will suffice. If you absolutely have to sleep with a fan, make sure to unpack it! Adequate rest is vital.

Only you can say what is next in order of importance, but don’t unpack all grandma’s china while your computer and television are still packed up (unless you use those things with the same rarity). Most people unpack lamps, electronics, clothes, a comfortable chair, and children’s toys next. Move at a pace and in a direction that makes sense to you. Most importantly, breathe. The hardest part is already behind you!
