Energy Saving Tips – Part 1: Residential Savings
If you’re buying a new home in Jasper, Indiana, you can be sure to start off right by taking heed of some important energy saving tips. Here are a few of our favorite tips for saving on residential energy costs. This is the first of a two-part blog series.
Conduct An Energy Audit
One of the easiest ways to save money on energy is to figure out exactly where your problem areas are and address them first. This requires very little effort on your part. You just need to have an energy audit done on your home. South Central Indiana REMC, among other companies, has Energy Advisors that will conduct a free energy audit of your home. This will let you know where energy is wasted. Check out this link to learn more.
Check Out Your HVAC System
Even if you have an Energy Star-qualified HVAC system, it could still be wasting energy. Yearly maintenance helps make sure these systems run their best. It will also help keep repair costs low and lengthen the life of the system. If you are just moving in to a new home, it’s possible that a tune-up or annual maintenance has never been conducted on the system. This will also help keep allergy risks lower, fire risks lower and save you money in energy costs.
Make sure you also change your filters regularly. If your filter is reusable, make sure you clean them regularly. During peak heating and cooling seasons, you should check and probably replace these inexpensive filters monthly! When they get more particles in them, the system has to work harder and is less efficient.
Get A Smart Thermostat
A smart thermostat offers a range of energy saving features. These thermostats even allow you to check on and adjust your thermostat when you’re not even home. You can use motion sensors to detect when people come home or are using an area. You can set programs that can seriously lower the amount of energy used on heating and cooling.
