Check Your Basement Sump Pump Annually To Ensure It’s Ready When You Need It

Sump pumps automatically turn on and pump water out of basements during flooding. Preventing basement flooding reduces the risk of mold in your house. Let’s face it, sometimes, even well-crafted basements leak during heavy rains. In the last 25 years, we’ve seen a drastic decline in emergency calls requesting help pumping out flooded basements. This is thanks to sump pumps.

Of course, it’s not enough to merely own a sump pump. You must make sure it’s working properly. You should check your sump pump once a year at least. When conducting maintenance on a sump pump, make sure the basin is empty.

First, make sure the outlet the sump pump is connected to is functioning. Simply unplug the pump and plug in a lamp to check its functioning. If you don’t have a battery back up for the pump, consider getting one. Especially since floods and power outages often go hand in hand. Check the inlet and screen. Make sure both are free of debris. Check the float. Make sure it moves freely. Remember, the float actuates the switch. So, if this is jammed, the pump might turn on when it needs to. Make sure the internal flap swings freely. Lubricate bearings on any moving parts that don’t move freely.

Then, test the sump pump. Just pour water into the basin. Make sure there’s enough water to raise the float. That should make the pump come on!
