DIY Hedging Means Having The Right Tools

Published On: April 14, 2018|Categories: Blog, Real Estate|Tags: , |

If you feel confident about DIY hedging, make sure you have the proper tools for the job. Without the right tools, hedging is best left to the landscaping pros. If you want lush, full hedges, make sure you have electric sheers, pruners and loppers.

Electric sheers make creating beautiful hedges easy. Just remember to shape hedges so that they are wider at the bottom and narrower at the top. It’s easiest if you start at the bottom and work your way up. If you don’t make the bottoms slightly wider than the tops, you might prevent some sunlight from getting to the bottom leaves and then end up with a scarcity of foliage at the bottom.

Use pruners to cut holes one to two feet apart into hedges that aren’t lush and thick. This helps get sunlight in deeper and the holes will fill in with foliage. When you use pruners to remove branches making small holes, be sure to cut at a 45 degree angle and remove the branches at the joints.

To cut branches that are larger than three-quarters of an inch in diameter, use loppers. But if your job is really big, be sure to remember to never cut more than one-third of the shrub’s branches. If you cut too much while hedging, you could kill the plant.
