Indiana Grown To Expand School Districts’ Access To Local Food

Indiana Grown To Expand School Districts’ Access To Local Food

Published On: November 4, 2018|Categories: Blog, Local Businesses, Schools|Tags: , , |

Indiana Grown is a state branding initiative from the Indiana State Department of Agriculture to help Hoosiers identify and utilize Indiana-grown foods. Now, Indiana Grown is working with three partners on a resource guide for school food service directors to help them choose foods grown in Indiana as part of their school nutrition programs.

Indiana Grown seeks farmers, producers and businesses to sell fruits, veggies and locally produced products to participate. The food resource guide will allow food service directors to make more informed purchasing decisions in order to bring more local food to students. The effort will help bring fresh local food to the school’s menu and support Indiana farmers and food producers, bolstering the state’s economy further.

So, first Indiana Grown must determine what local products are available in the state and who would like to be included in the resource guide. The State Department of Health and Perdue Extension are helping to create the local food resource guide. The Indiana Department of Education will be tasked with distributing the guide to all Indiana public school corporations.
