How to Stage a Small Kitchen to Sell Your Home Fast

You know you need to stage your home to sell, but what if you have a small kitchen? This guide has four tips you can use today.

How to Stage a Small Kitchen to Sell Your Home Fast

If you’re selling a home in Jasper or one of the surrounding communities, your real estate agent will probably talk to you about staging. Staging is the art of making your home as attractive as possible to prospective buyers.

But what if your kitchen is small? Can you still stage it and make it appealing? Of course! Check out these four tips for staging a small kitchen to sell your home quickly:

  1. Empty the counters
  2. Use smaller furnishings and decor
  3. Brighten the entire space
  4. Repaint in a light color

Here’s a closer look at each.

Tip #1 for Staging a Small Kitchen: Empty the Counters

clutter is the enemy of home staging, especially in small spaces. That means you need to clear off your countertops completely, removing anything that isn’t attached. You want buyers to see how much counter space there is, but even something small, such as a smoothie blender or toaster, will interrupt the counter’s lines and make it appear crowded.

Though a lot of home staging advice says that you should put one small piece of decor on your kitchen counters, that’s not the case if your space is small. Remove everything, including your knife rack, recipe holder and smart home hub.

Tip #2 for Staging a Small Kitchen: Use Smaller Furnishings and Decor

When your kitchen is small, big furnishings such as bar stools, and big pieces of decor (like wall art) can make it appear even more crowded than it is. Take down large pieces of wall art, consider downsizing your barstools (or at least removing one or two of them), and relocate anything that makes the space feel cramped.

You can replace large wall art with smaller pieces. Better yet, consider putting a mirror where your biggest piece of decor once resided. Mirrors serve to make rooms appear larger, and even better, they reflect light.

Tip #3 for Staging a Small Kitchen: Brighten the Entire Space

Brighter spaces appear larger, and fortunately, there are several ways you can brighten your kitchen. First, take down curtains and replace them with blinds. When someone comes to see your home, make sure the blinds are pulled up as high as they’ll go to maximize natural light in your small kitchen.

If you have the budget and ability to do so, consider upgrading your light fixtures. You don’t have to remodel your kitchen and rewire your electrical system, but make sure you have a light fixture that allows as much light as possible in the room.

Finally, consider adding a mirror, like we suggested in Tip #2. mirrors reflect light and make spaces appear larger, even if the mirrors themselves aren’t that big.

Tip #4 for Staging a Small Kitchen: Repaint in a Light Color

Darker colors make rooms appear smaller and more closed in, so repainting your kitchen is almost always a good idea. Opt for a light, bright color that makes the room appear cheerful.

If your cabinets are dark, consider refacing them or replacing them. Additionally, if you have dark countertops, you may want to replace them if the price is right. You should always talk to your real estate agent about making major upgrades to your home, including kitchen counters or cabinets, though. That’s because those types of upgrades may not be necessary, and they’ll eat into your profits when you end up selling your home.
