Authorities Investigate Possible Black Bear Sighting In Nearby Floyd County

To the east of Dubois County near the 121 mile market of Interstate 64 in Floyd County, authorities are investigating a potential black bear sighting. Here’s the scoop: On Sunday, there was an accident around 8 o’clock in the evening. The driver and another witness said that the accident involved a large animal. The reports from the driver and the witness led Indiana Conservation Officers to begin looking into it as a possible black bear sighting.

The officers searched the rugged terrain in the dark off the interstate, but didn’t find the animal. Today, officers will be checking the area again for more clues to positively identify the sighting as a black bear sighting.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) were once abundant all across the state of Indiana with the exception of the prairie areas in the northwest parts of the state. By 18050, unregulated hunting and loss of habitat drove them from our gorgeous state. Until recent years, the final confirmed report of a black bear in Indiana was in 1871.

Then, in 2015, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources verified that there was a young male black bear living in St. Joseph County.  The following year, black bear sightings were confirmed in southern Indiana in Harrison, Washington and Clark counties.

Black bears are rarely aggressive. Sometimes officials euthanize black bears when then become too comfortable around humans after getting fed by people too much or associating people with food in general.
