Patoka Valley LimbHangers Held Two-Day Youth Turkey Hunt

The Patoka Valley LimbHangers is a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Recently, they held a two-day event aimed at encouraging youth to appreciate the tradition of turkey hunting. Another goal of the event was simply to encourage the youth to spend some time outside. In all, 15 kids participated in the two-day Youth Turkey Hunt.

Did you know that a 2016 survey published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claimed that the number of hunters dropped from 13.7 million in 2011 to 11.5 million in 2016? In just five years, there was a 16 percent decrease in the number of hunters. The Dubois County Herald reported that it represents a a continued downward trend in hunting. It has dropped 11 percent from 1991 to 2006.

The Patoka Valley LimbHangers are determined to spread their enjoyment of hunting with the next generation. They say it’s practical and gets kids away from their computers and devices for a bit. They say it helps the youth enjoy nature and have fun as part of a group hunting event.
