The Jasper Comprehensive Plan approved by the Jasper Plan Commission included thoughts on urban forestry. Why urban forestry? Well, trees actually induce traffic calming, reduce urban temperatures, and help create an identity. They help reduce stormwater, air pollution, and energy consumption. Cities with ample trees encourage economic benefits too. More people are drawn to downtowns with attractive tree-lined roads and urban forest areas. Trees help make strolling through town to shop and eat more comfortable because of their shade and psychological impacts. Trees can increase commercial and residential property values. Lower temperatures from shading can reduce the frequency of repaving.

Managed Meadows at Parklands

Jasper’s ideas for using a “managed-meadows” approach in Jasper Parklands has many benefits. For starters, managed meadows provide a learning laboratory for school children, residents, and even scientists.  Managed meadows allow for the community to step into nature, but still accommodate facilities, walk-ways, and parking areas. They offer a destination point, create civic pride and are easy to maintain. This 75-acre natural oasis was once the Jasper Country Club golf course. The Parklands won’t see booked events until at least July, but it certain to be a major asset to the community.
