You’ve decided it’s time to sell your house, and while you are busy researching real estate agents, local laws, and other things about house sales, you’re wondering how to go about photographing your house. There are three options: You can hire an outside professional, you can let your real estate agent take care of it, or you can try to photograph your house yourself. If nothing else, by reviewing the photos, you may see some areas of your house that could use some works, and also some areas that are stand-outs.

Three Great Tips For Photographing Your Home

  • Get rid of all clutter
  • Shine the stove, clean the windows
  • Use natural light to your advantage

Look around – the bags of old clothes that need to go to the donation center, the newspapers that have stacked up on the coffee table, the old toys that aren’t played with anymore (but collect a lot of dust) not only look unsightly, they hide the good things – your beautiful hardwood floors, the French Doors that lead into the foyer. Remove the clutter and let your home’s unique facets shine through!

This is the time to wash the windows to a shine, polish the stove, scrub the bathtub…make it all sparkle and shine. Buff the hardwood floors, and make sure everything is perfectly clean. Hire a professional cleaning crew if you have to, but if your house is dirty, it will photograph very poorly.

Think of sunlight, time of day, and time of year when you photograph your home. Glare from snow, rain, or a sunset can interfere with the beauty of your photos. Natural light is perfect, so throw the doors open and blinds open. If the leaves are changing, that can be a beautiful background. A gorgeous spring morning with daffodils in bloom may also be beautiful.
