Three Excellent Fall Lawn Care Tips
With autumn being just around the corner, it’s time for falling leaves and crisp, cool mornings. Autumn is beautiful, but the lawn care involved – particularly if you have a lot of leaves on the ground – may be a gigantic pain! The colors of fall leaves are beautiful on the trees and as they fall off, but all too soon they turn into a dingy pile of muck if left on the ground. If not removed, they can kill your grass and make snow removal difficult in the winter. Fortunately there are some tried and true tips for keeping your yard in tip-top shape this autumn!
Three Excellent Fall Lawn Care Tips
- Seed some cool season grass
- pull up any dead plants/ cut back rose bushes
- Mulch leaves or simply mow over with any mower
Some cool season grass varieties (such as Kentucky blue grass) can be seeded in late summer/early Autumn and will do beautifully. Take care not to mow over it until the next spring, but this likely won’t be a problem as it won’t be very high by the first hard freeze. A lot of birds begin to migrate as well, so your grass seed may actually stay seeded.
Now is the time to pull any dead plants and cut back bushes and roses. You won’t hesitate since most of the blooms are gone, and cutting back the blooms will greatly help with the foliage your plants display next year. If you have bulbs that are susceptible to dying from a hard freeze, dig those up and store them in a dark, dry place for the winter.
Leaves are beautiful, but when left on the ground to rot in deep piles, they can cause significant problems. Think of what happens once snow falls. They can be very slick, and can rot and kill the grass beneath them. A much better alternative is to mow over your leaves, even if you don’t have a mulcher. Mowing over them does essentially the same thing – it will provide nutrient dense nitrogen to the grass, and take care of the leaves.
