Have you ever heard of the Good Neighbor Next Door Program sponsored by HUD? The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD, is a Cabinet department in the Executive branch of the Us federal government. They sponsor many programs, including the Good Neighbor Next Door program. It isn’t just limited to first-time homebuyers. It’s actually open to professions including law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics, and teachers. Here’s the deal though. A home purchased through the Good Neighbor Next Door Program must be your primary residence. When you agree to live in the home for at least three years, you can get up to a 50 percent savings and a low downpayment of just $100.

If you want to check out properties available through the Good Neighbor Next Door program, you can check on the HUD website. They aren’t always available in every area at all times, but it’s a great place to check. The homes are usually properties located in places that have been marked for revitalization. The idea is to attract a strong workforce of members of these valuable professions into a neighborhood.

Be sure to check the property out though, because since the areas are areas targeted for revitalization, they might not be in areas you want to live. For couples just starting out though, this can be the perfect investment, stater home. An area of rural abandonment or urban decay that’s been marked for revitalization can mean that improved conditions, and consequently, improved home values may be on the way down the road.
