Major Curb Appeal a Plants that Bloom All Summer Long

Annuals sometimes get a bad rap because people dislike the idea of having to plant every year. While it’s preferable to have beautiful flowers that return every year because it’s low maintenance and low cost, there’s no denying that some annuals are gorgeous and there are nearly two dozen varieties that bloom all summer long, which could be six months or longer, depending on where you live. It is also possible to overwinter some annuals with varying degrees of success. Annuals have exciting varieties of color that shouldn’t be ignored when you are seeking to beautify your yard.

One resilient and popular annual is the petunia. Is comes in various colors of pink, purple, white, red, and even striped. These can proliferate quickly, adding major zing to your flower bed.

Zinnias love a sunny location, and also flourish in hot weather, but do have a voracious need for water. Their bright pops of color intermingle well with petunias.
Marigolds bloom in happy shades of yellow and orange, and they are also known to keep pests away because insects dislike their unusual scent. They are nice additions to flower beds and vegetable gardens.

Snapdragons are another wonderful addition and can be started inside from seedlings. They are one of the few flowers that give a genuine shade of peach if you’re a peach lover.

Dahlias are old-time favorite, with some blooms growing as large as a dinner plate. These come from tubers which can be dug up and stored in a dark place, such as a basement, and used the next spring. These are truly impressive flowers because of their huge size and color extravagance – so be sure to have enough room to showcase them.

Impatiens are another good choice that display well all summer long. They have smaller flowers that are bright and can grow in a bush-like form, and are very easy to care for.

If you love shades of bright red, Salvia could be what you’re looking for. They are drought resistant and will do well from mid spring to late fall in most areas. They can grow tall, so it’s best to place them toward the back of your flowerbed.

While perennials should be a mainstay for a hassle free yard, don’t be afraid to throw some beautiful annuals into the mix! Because they aren’t a permanent addition, you can always decide and experiment from year to year what you are looking to create in your flower garden!
