Long after a cigarette has come and gone, it has a mark that remains. Most people don’t smoke indoors anymore, but you’ll still encounter a few holdouts – those that smoke in their whole house or just one room of it. Once that house is vacated by the smoker, many are left wondering what they can do to get rid of the odor. Cigarette smoke has been known to linger in carpet and fabrics for years. Of course, the first step would be to remove any ashtrays, ashes, cigarette butts, etc., and get the windows wide open if possible.

Three Ways To Get Rid Of Cigarette Smoke Odor

White Vinegar
Baking Soda
Wash bedding, upholstery, and curtains.

White vinegar is great because it eliminates odors. I know you are thinking “Wait, doesn’t it smell bad too?” and the answer is – the odor if vinegar dissipates in a few hours. So set bowls of it around the house, wash down appliances and non-wood floor surfaces with it. It will absorb odor and clean and smoke residue

If you can’t replace the carpet, sprinkle copious amounts of baking soda all over the carpet and any furniture upholstery that can’t be washed. Let it sit for a day or say to remove odors, then vacuum. Sprinkle fresh baking soda and vacuum again. After this, it’s probably best to rent a steam cleaner, and steam clean your carpet and furniture until the water no longer turns black. After it dries out, you can use the baking soda trick again ( but definitely wait until everything is 100% dry or you will have a pasty mess!)

Load up all bedding, rugs, curtains – and if you’re keeping them – take them to the laundromat for a heavy duty wash cycle. Allow to dry in the sun if possible. If you really want to speed things along, paint the house and ceilings, which have no doubt been stained and yellowed by the smoke anyway. Your lungs and guests will thank you!
