How To Care for Your Cast Iron Cookware
Ahhh, your cast iron cookware. You’re been wanting some forever, and it’s so expensive that you waited around until you found a good deal or a good reason to splurge. Maybe you inherited your grandma’s favorite skillet that you remember when you were a child. Whatever the situation, you have a nice heavy piece of cookware that you need to care for now – do you know how to do so properly?
How To Care for Your Cast Iron Cookware
- Scrape Off what you can
- It’s OK to use a little water if necessary
- A little dish soap is okay too
- Do NOT leave it soak in water all night
- Remember that some “seasoning” (fats and flavors from other foods cooked on it) is good.
Scrape off whatever food you can, once the pan is cool, with a spatula. Many can also be wiped out with a paper towel, and that could be all that they need.
If your pan is particularly messy, a little water is okay. A little dish soap is okay too, but remember to rinse and dry it thoroughly and don’t leave it exposed to water for too long. You don’t need to wash the whole pan – perhaps just the part that had hard to remove food.
Whatever you do, don’t put your cast-iron in a sink or any water source to soak all night – this will lead to rust. It will lead to the end of your cast iron skillet. Whatever your cast iron skillet needs, it is not this!
Remember that cast iron skillets are “seasoned” by the foods and fats that have been cooked on them previously. They don’t need washed – being wiped out is more than sufficient. A seasoned pan is a happy pan, and a dry pan is an unhappy pan. Remember that heating the pan to cooking temperatures kills microorganisms.
