Three Low-Cost Ways To Decorate Your Porch For Fall
The temperatures may not be falling yet, but they soon will be, and soon after that, the leaves will fall! Whether you are selling your home or just enjoying the change of seasons, it’s a good time to show off a beautiful porch or freshly-painted door and window shutters by having a brilliant fall display on your porch, by your mailbox, or somewhere on your front lawn.
Three Low-Cost Ways To Decorate Your Porch For Fall
- Chrysanthemums
- Bales of hay
- Pumpkins
You can arrange these in any fashion you would like – chrysanthemums (commonly called “mums” can be found in hues of rust, gold, yellow, purple, and orange. They are a hardy flower that can withstand some frost, and are found at nurseries, supermarkets, and discount stores. You can also plant them in the ground and they will return in bloom for next fall. Their blooming season is typically about a month, and they are thwarted by a hard freeze.
Bales of hay can be purchased from your local farmer, hobby store, or nursery. Bales of hay are nice to set a pot of mums or pumpkins atop, and they are equally useful if you decide to sow some grass seed when you are finished with your display – simply dismantle your bale and spread it overtop your seeds to protect the seeds from being eaten by birds.
Pumpkins are fall-famous because that’s when they mature. You can do many things with pumpkins – carve them, paint them, or simply arrange various sizes and shapes for a nice display. They are fairly inexpensive and can be found at farmer’s markets and supermarkets. A few things about pumpkins – they don’t last nearly as long after being carved, and will begin to rot, especially if you have some very hot days. Many prefer to paint them instead, or to go natural and let them be in their simplistic glory alone. When you’re done with your pumpkin display, don’t throw it away! Instead, throw the pumpkins in your garden or a side flower bed. You’ll likely get some volunteer pumpkin vines next year that are beautiful while blooming in summer and will yield you some more pumpkins.
