If you found a little mold in your basement, don’t reach for the bleach! Never use bleach to clean your cinder block foundation. Never. Everyone knows that bleach kills mold. So, many of us assume we could safely use bleach once time to deal with a mild mold issue in the basement. This is a huge mistake though. Mold spores fly through the air and land where they will. They can easily get inside porous surfaces like cinder blocks. Even if you don’t have a major mold problem, chances are good mold spores are waiting in the pores of the blocks for just the right conditions. After all, that’s what mold spores do. They wait for warmth an moisture.
Did you know that bleach has an ionic structure that makes it so that the chlorine can’t penetrate into porous materials like cinder block? The chlorine part of the bleach sits on the surface. Yet, 90 percent of bleach is actually water. The water can easily penetrate the porous surface. When it does, it meets the mold spores waiting inside. That’s why you should never use bleach to clean your cinder block foundations. Not only will it be impossible to kill all the mold with the bleach, but you will also feed the mold that’s deeper inside of the cinder blocks. Your mold problem will be worse than it was when you started in a week or two!
