Social Media: Three Reasons to Use Facebook Groups for Online Networking

Social Media: Three Reasons to Use Facebook Groups for Online NetworkingIt’s always essential to have a network around you when working from home. At times, it may not be possible to have that in a physical sense. With this in mind, online networking is vital, and it goes beyond only having a LinkedIn account. So, this article focuses on some of the benefits of using Facebook groups for this purpose

  1. Limit self-isolation

Many people thrive when they are working independently from home. However, it’s crucial to remember the importance of other human interaction. Even if you have some of that within your working group, some external networks are a good idea.

Look after your mental health by joining some groups that go beyond your immediate working group. Of course, it’s a good idea to look for options where there is common ground. For example, those that do a similar job or work in the same sector. Freelance writers will have plenty in common with other freelancers even if they cover different sectors and topics. Finding that common ground will certainly keep loneliness at bay.

  1. Exchange of contacts or referrals

A lot of people who work from home always need new connections to find more work. Of course, this category of Facebook groups may not be free to join, but it can be well worth it. Other freelancers may have a client who needs more work than they can handle on their own. A bit of work in the group may connect you with a new client.

There are also more formal referral systems that can work exceptionally well. For example, someone sets up a service that looks to connect clients with freelancers. The client’s details can then be posted in the group for freelancers to apply. Again, this information sharing can be invaluable even if there is a modest monthly or yearly fee involved.

  1. Helps you generate ideas

Communicating with others is an innovative way of getting your idea generation system working. For example, if you are a writer, you can post an extract of writing and receive immediate feedback from the members of the group.

However, often the way you generate ideas isn’t as direct as that. Merely talking about your work and career can move ideas along. You may also learn from the work that others are doing and perhaps find a new way of looking at something. Remember though to ensure you aren’t only active in a group to take ideas. It may well be that you can offer some timely advice to a freelancer that is struggling as well.

Facebook groups have a lot of useful purposes, especially for people who are often isolated because of the nature of their work. Equally, if you find yourself working from home for a period, you may be joining some new groups for the first time. Remember, some of the benefits include limiting self-isolation, exchange of contacts and a place you can share and generate ideas.
