You don’t have to travel a great distance to experience world-class cultural attractions. In fact, you don’t have to travel at all to view cultural attractions if you have an internet connection. That’s because any museums offer free virtual tours. Here are several of the more popular (and free) virtual museum tours.
National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. offers a couple of virtual tours through a partnership with Google. Just jump on their website and right on the home page you will find 3 Virtual tours: True to Nature featuring oil sketches made outdoors across Europe, Degas at the Opéra which has a a mixture of art and music great for Band & Music teachers, and Raphael and His Circle which shows art from Raffaelo di Giovanni Santi, the younger contemporary of Leonardo and Michelangelo.
The J. Paul Getty Museum
The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles offers virtual visitors a large collection of European artwork to enjoy. For example, you can view paintings and sculptures that are over a thousand years old. You can also view historical photographs and manuscripts. J. Paul Getty also has an abundance of Resources for Students including art techniques materials & concepts. As bonus they also have some educational Podcasts you can listen to including a free audio tour of Michelangelo’s artwork!
Google’s street view option lets online visitors see the iconic staircase at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The virtual tour also includes famous works of art from several eras, including Contemporary and Modern.
The British Museum
The world-famous British Museum in London lets virtual visitors view hundreds of artifacts using Google Street View. For example, you can view the Egyptian mummies, the Great Court (from Queen Elizabeth II), and the original Rosetta Stone.
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul is South Korea’s most popular art gallery. However, now art enthusiasts can virtually tour the museum from anywhere in the world. The online tour includes 4 different online exhibits including the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Korean Modern Masters: Yoo Youngkuk 1916 – 2002, Park Hyunki 1942 – 2000 Mandala, Garden and Birth of a Museum: Documenting the Construction of MMCA, Seoul
The Pergamon Museum in Berlin features one of the largest collections of ancient artifacts in the world. You can find 8 different online exhibits at the Pergamon Museum including Monumental, What happened in Pergamon, The Eighth Wonder of the World, Short Visit: Pergamon Altar, Refugees as Guides in Berlin Museums, Antiquity on Sale, Crazy in Love and Blue Miracle: Repuzzled. The online tour also includes a large collection of historical German artifacts. As a bonus, they have an awesome YouTube channel with tons of online art tours. You will have to use the English Subtitles to watch them.
Van Gogh Museum
Fans of Van Gogh’s art can enjoy a virtual tour of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The virtual art tour includes hundreds of paintings and drawings from the brilliant artist including Vangogh’s life & work and there is a 7 part Virtual Tour available on their YouTube Channel.
The Uffizi Gallery in Florence features a collection of Italian art from the Renaissance. The art gallery is housed in a historical building from the 16th Century. Luckily, you can enjoy a (virtual) tour of the building and its artwork without taking a trip to Florence. You can view their Digital Archives as well as view hundreds of Video tours on their YouTube Channel.
National Museum of Anthropology
The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City houses a large collection of artifacts from the pre-Columbian era in Mexico. For example, you can tour dozens of rooms filled with ancient tools and pottery from the Mayans. YSome of the highlights include the Sun Stone or Aztec Calendar, a Recreation of Pakal’s tomb in Maya and the Jade Mask of the Zapotec Bat God in Oaxaca. Their Instagram has quite a few video tours and was the best source we found. But don’t miss their YouTube Channel (with English subtitles) for some awesome virtual tour walk throughs and their 3D Tours on specific museum exhibits
Finally, fans of the Dutch Golden Age can take a virtual tour – via Google’s Street View – of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Their Virtual online tour lets you browse the museum halls filled with artwork from Rembrandt and Vermeer, view masterpieces up close and meet up with friends and take the Grand Rijksmuseum Pub Quiz!
