Relocating Tip: One Answer You Should Avoid In A Job Interview

If you’re thinking of relocating to Dubois County, you might be faced with some job interviews. New city, new job. You know.

We just thought we’d give you a heads up on how not to blow an otherwise great interview. Julie Zhuo, a Facebook veteran and Vice President of product design, told Inc. Magazine one of the worst ways to answer a common interview question.

“Why do you want this position?”

Positions are often stepping stones to better positions and better jobs at better firms. That’s logical. Everyone is aware of this. Yet, that doesn’t mean you should say, “Because it’s the next step up in my career.”

As true as it probably is, it just turns interviewers off. It makes it seem like the person is an “all about themselves” kind of person, Zhuo explains. Though all employers know that company loyalty is nothing like it was in previous generations, if you remind an interviewer that you see your previous jobs as steps towards something this job, you also remind them that this job is just a step towards the next.

While they are aware of the inevitability that employees eventually move on, when the candidate names that as the number one reason they want the job, the interviewer knows that you’ll only stay long enough to make it look good on your resume!
