How To Move In a Hurry

Sometimes life comes hard and fast at us – with unexpected things like a new job, an emergency, or situation that makes you need to relocate quickly. That’s daunting no matter what, but if you own a home, it can be a lot trickier than just leaving an apartment.

First, don’t panic. Make a list of logistics that must be accomplished – do you need to hire a moving company? Rent a truck? Hire or reserve those immediately.

Go through your home, room by room, hopefully with the help of a few good friends, and get rid of everything you don’t use. Give away clothes, furniture, decor, dishes and other goods that you don’t use. Bonus – make a donation to a charitable cause and you can write it off on your taxes. Don’t forget a receipt. Call your garbage collection agency and find out how much trash they will pick up at a time (some even take broken furniture if you call and let them know) and arrange to throw away as much junk as possible. It is much less complicated to sort things pre-move than after-move. Take all of your non-perishable food to a food pantry.
Think about essentials you’ll need with you at all times and make an “necessities bag.” This could include things like cell phone, charger, medicines and prescriptions, important documents, toiletries, and a change of clothes. Put your bag in a safe place where it won’t get lost while you pack up your house (maybe in your car?)

While it’s nice to pack in an organized manner, a fast move may mean you don’t have time. It might be more about gathering appropriate boxes and packing things up as quickly and safely as possible. You can organize once you get to your new home – remember, you’ve already given away or thrown out all unneeded items.

Use towels or sheets to wrap breakables. Once a box is filled, tape it up securely and move it to the side. For clothing, take it as it is. Empty drawers into boxes and take hanging up clothes on hangers, wrapping garbage bags around them.

Enlist friends – offer things you’re giving away and pizza as an incentive. If you don’t have a house where you are headed yet, now is the time to make sure you at least have temporary housing plans, even if it’s a budget hotel while you scout the area once you’re there.
