The history of Indiana is a rich one, filled with stories of hard work and determination. This is true everywhere, and Evansville is no exception. The Evansville area has an incredible wealth of stories to tell, from one of the most well preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States, to the site of an epic battle during the American Revolution, there is no shortage of history within this area Indiana.

Native Americans have an amazing culture that shows just how genius their people are, and their historical sites prove that fact. The Angel Mounds State Historic Site is one such historical site, and is considered to be one of the most well preserved sites out there! These prehistoric people gathered at the Angel Mounds site over one thousand years ago, and were known as the Mississippians. They left behind many artifacts, and the historical site has exhibits showing us what life may have been like for them. A new exhibit will be opening up soon, and details the life’s work of noted Indiana archaeologist Glenn A. Black. The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM, and can be found at their street address, 8215 Pollack Ave. Evansville, IN 47715.

Some history doesn’t have to be unearthed, however. This history can be sitting right in front of us, and in Evansville it sits at the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. There, a memorial stands on the site where Lt. Colonel George Rogers Clark and his frontiersmen defeated Lt. Governor Henry Hamilton and his soldiers in order to capture Fort Sackville from the British. This battle was an incredible feat, and is considered one of the greatest accomplishments in the war. Without such a battle, the original thirteen states would have stayed colonies, and neither Evansville or America would be here today. The historical park has interactive exhibits in the adjacent visitors center, telling visitors all about battle. The park can be found at 401 S. Second St. Vincennes, Indiana 47591.

Evansville, Indiana, truly has an incredible wealth of history.
