Get your Holiday Food Prep Started Early
You don’t need to wait until the day before Christmas to begin your holiday food preparation. With a little planning and prep-work, you can eliminate the stress from serving holiday meals. Here are some of the best tips for starting your holiday food preparations today.
Shop as Early as Possible
Don’t wait until a few days before Christmas to begin shopping for the ingredients for meals and treats. If you shop in advance, then you can avoid the last minute rush in the stores and the likelihood of items being out of stock! Plan to make several shopping trips to multiple stores to find the things that are required for your holiday recipes. Make sure to clean out the refrigerator and make some room for items that need to stay cold and designate a space in the pantry or in a spare room where you can store your dry groceries.
Bake, Cook and Freeze Treats and Meals
If you know anything about food prep then you know it’s entirely possible to cook or bake many types of side dishes and desserts in advance and freeze them. This allows you to start weeks if not months in advance. For example, you can prepare your green bean casserole ahead of time and store in a zip lock freezer bag. Thaw the day before and pop them in the oven to heat back up. Pies can be remade AND cooked as well as other popular dishes like mashed potatoes and desserts. While there are some things that you can’t precook, you can make the day of your event easier and stress-free by planning ahead.
Plan a Christmas Cookie Exchange
Its always nice to have an assortment of Christmas Holiday cookies laid out for your guests to enjoy and snack on. To avoid the cost and time of making them all yourself, arrange a cookie exchange. Each participant in the cookie exchange will make a large number of cookies to trade with the other individuals in the exchange. Meet up together at a friends house to make the exchange and enjoy an evening with your friends. If your event is still a ways off you can freeze your cookies. On the day of your party, your guests will be delighted to see all of the different treats!
Get out the Serving Trays!
Don’t wait until Christmas Eve to find the punch bowl or serving trays for your Christmas dinner. Find these things as early as possible to make sure that the items are ready for the holiday meal & store them with the dry goods you purchased ahead of time! If you have a separate dining room, then you can set the table a few days before, making sure to cover it with a plastic sheet or cloth to keep dust away from everything on the table.
