“Does Dubois County Have A TNR Program For Feral Cats?”

In the TNR community, people call feral cats, “community cats.” The TNR community also knows that the only management program proven to be remotely effective in lowering the numbers of stray and feral cats in a community is by implementing a TNR program. TNR is a “no-kill” option. In Dubois County, our animal rescuers know this. That’s why Dubois County’s humane society offers a TNR program for feral cats.

What’s TNR?

TNR is short for trap-neuter-release or trap-neuter-return. During the TNR process, local residents trap stray cats in the community, take them to the humane society, clinic, or animal control agency. There, a vet will spay or neuter the animal, give the cat a rabies vaccination or more vaccines, depending on the municipality and usually give the cat an ear tip. That’s how you’ll recognize a community cat in Dubois County: The ear tip. It tells caregivers and vets that the animal is vaccinated and fixed. After this process and some healing time, the animal is then released back into the area it was trapped.

Why TNR?

Cats are territorial, so if cats are simply euthanized because they are feral cat, other cats will fill the void in the territory. But if you fix and return the cat, they will continue to defend their territory, just without reproducing. These cats are also less likely to mark their territory, make loud yowling noises at night and fight. This also means diseases are less likely to be spread to our pet cats.
