In 1883, Bodium Coal Company had the site’s first coal mine in the same area of Evansville as Reitz High School. The high school now boasts a beautiful hill used for entertainment, social engagements and -of course- sledding. But do you know the previous name of Reitz Hill? The are was actually known as Coal Mine Hill.

Back then, coal was removed by hand with the help of mules and miniature horses. It produced a bituminous coal, which is a higher quality coal. It was transferred out by barge. The coal mine eventually made it to a depth of 265 feet. They even mined beneath the bend of the Ohio River! That lasted until 1917 when the mine was closed.

Before long, that hill, with its gorgeous view, became prime real estate!
