DIY Project: Beachy Wine Bottle Decor

DIY Project: Beachy Wine Bottle DecorIs your house overflowing with empty wine bottles from Wine Wednesday? Can’t throw away the colorful ones? What is an oenophile to do with all those empty, pretty glass bottles? Luckily, it doesn’t take much time or money to turn empty wine bottles into beachy décor.

All you need are your empties, a roll of jute from any craft store, scissors, and a hot glue gun.

First, choose your best-looking wine bottles. This DIY works best with bottles of different sizes and colors. Find the unique ones! Take a small section of jute and wrap it one time around the neck of the bottle. There should be a little bit of give in the jute–don’t make it too tight because you’ll be slipping several other pieces behind it. Hot glue the ends so you have a circle of jute around the neck.

Measure the length of your bottle and multiply that by 5. Cut your first piece of jute. Depending on how tight you want your design, cut between 5 and 10 pieces of equal length. Five pieces will create a loose design, while 10 or more pieces will create a tight design. Both are pretty! Loose designs look more relaxed, while tighter designs look more uniform.

Take the first piece of jute and fold it in half. Slip-knot or loop it through your circle of jute at the top of the bottle. You should now have two pieces hanging from your first knot. Do this with each strand of jute and distribute them evenly around the bottle.

You’re now ready to start knotting. If you know any macramé, this will be simple. Starting anywhere on the bottle, take the left strand of one loop and the right strand of the loop directly next to it and bring them together to create a diamond. Make your diamond anywhere between an inch and two inches long, and tie a simple knot. Work your way around the bottle making diamonds and tying knots, but make sure to keep the knots in line with each other for the most professional look.

Once you’ve gone around the bottle once, you’re ready to start the next row down. Form your next diamond roughly the same size as your diamonds above and work your way around. Do this for the length of the bottle. Try to line your bottom row of knots up directly with the bottom of the bottle so it will sit nice and flat.

To finish, tightly wrap the neck of your bottle with jute and hot glue the edges. Trim them back as closely as possible, and you’ve got a beachy wine bottle. Use it as a centerpiece or on top of a cabinet. Consider adding jewels or glitter for a more glam look. And drink up! You’ll need some more bottles…for decoration, of course.
