Best Ways To Protect Your Garden From Undesirable Weather Damage
Is your garden prepared to withstand weather damage? There are some easy, inexpensive ways to for lack of a better term, “weather-proof” your garden. Gardens are a lot of work. While the work is rewarding, it’s very disappointing when a random early freeze or hailstorm ruins your garden plants. Here are some tips for keeping your garden safer against the elements
Withstanding An Early (Or Late) Freeze
Freeze warning can be unsettling, but there are ways to better protect your plants from unexpected frosts and freezes. The number one way to protect plants is actually to water the plant one day before the freeze. If they have plenty to drink before the freeze, they will do much better. The moisture in the soil will insulate the roots. Make sure the air temperature is still above 40 degrees when you water the plants though.
Young plants can find protection from being covered by terra cotta garden pots or another covering too. I once saw a woman make a tent with sheets to protect her tomato plants and it worked! Plastic tarps are the easiest way, but if the freeze is headed in, any kind of barrier will help!
How To Get Through A Dry Spell
Sometimes you know you won’t be able to water the garden during a dry spell. Plastic or terra cotta watering stakes can help with that. You place a water bottle on top of the stakes and the set up will help make sure that the soil stays hydrated even if you won’t be there to water during the dry days.
Fighting Excess Water
If your garden is properly drained and it’s still too wet for too long, the soil can deprive the plant of oxygen it needs. Making sure to add compost to your soil regularly attracts earthworms. These worms create air pockets in the soil and that helps with drainage and aeration!
