Spring Cleaning Shortcuts: Windows and Window Treatments

Spring Cleaning Shortcuts: Windows and Window TreatmentsSpring is here and it’s time to liven up your home and begin anew. When the jasmines are coming into bloom with their sweet scent in the air, you’ll know spring has sprung and with that comes the urge to refresh and renew your household.

When it comes to cleaning this time of year, there are a variety of ways to approach the annual project that can definitely make it a more enjoyable event. This doesn’t have to be an onerous chore, especially if you take a few spring-cleaning shortcuts along the way.

At least once a year, there are certain household items that should be cleansed. The most obvious ones are your windows. But keep in mind that your window treatments could use a freshening, also. Beginning with just those two chores, you can let the sunshine in with a few simple cleansing wipes and some vacuuming.

Window Cleaning the Quick Way

Windows need a good cleaning by this time of year. Here are a few tips on getting your windows shiny and brilliant for the season that don’t involve too much effort.

For each window, take a look at the sill, the window frame and the tracks that the window moves up and down on. Now brush away any obvious dirt and cobwebs that have collected there so they don’t end up on your windows after you’ve cleaned them. One timesaving tip is to not bother removing the screens. Just vacuum them with the brush attachment, working side-to-side from the top down.

For tilt-in windows, spray some liquid glass cleaner on the inside panes. Wipe off the liquid with a lint-free cloth, rubbing from side to side, horizontally, until it’s dry. Then tilt the window in so you can clean the outside panes, and wipe it dry with the cloth moving from the top down, vertically. Wiping in the two different directions lets you see which side of the window might still have streaks or dirt remaining.

For those double-hung windows, just slide the bottom part of the window up far enough so you can get your arm through it to clean the outside panes. Spray and wipe down as much as you can. Shut the window, then approach the rest of the outside panes by pulling down the top part of the window about 8 inches to get your arm through.

If you have some windows that don’t open conveniently, such as a skylights or casement windows, just clean the inside and spray the outside panes with a water hose.

Window Treatment Clean-Ups

Pleated Honeycomb Shades: Vacuum these to get any dust and dirt removed. Use the long bristle attachment and vacuum horizontally.

Blinds: Close your wood or faux wood blinds so the slats are facing downward. Now run a microfiber cloth along the slats, beginning at the top and going left to right horizontally. Now open the blinds so the slats are facing upwards and repeat.

Draperies and Curtains: Depending upon the material of which these are made, you can either machine-wash, hand-wash or steam-clean them. Some materials may need a professional dry cleaner.
