DIY Furniture: Is it Worth It?
Whether you’re moving into your first apartment or moving into your dream home, furniture can get expensive, and fast. Thanks to the internet, there are furniture options for just about every budget; including those who want to DIY their space. It does beg the question: Is do it yourself furniture worth the time and effort?
Self Evaluation
The most important step in the entire process is to consider your personal skill set, commitment, and above all: your patience. Have you done a lot of DIY work in the past? Are they simple projects, or more complex? Are you self motivated with good attention to detail? Will you take the time to complete the project properly, or will you rush through just for the sake of getting it done? Realistically, the answers to these questions will help you decide if you are able to tackle a DIY furniture project.
Of course, self evaluation also includes considering what types of tools you own, if any, will be needed to complete the project. If you don’t have the right tools, or you’re unfamiliar with them, you’ll need to take this into account both with your skill set and with your budget. Fortunately, both can be rectified with some internet how-to videos and if necessary, renting or buying the right tools.
Determining Your Budget
It goes without saying that cost plays a huge role in DIY furniture. It is entirely possible to sink hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars into a project depending on the scale and the materials used. While you can easily create a budget friendly end table, there are other more involved projects that can really break the bank, such as reupholstering a sofa or creating a large scale built in entertainment center. Be sure to take this into account when determining if a particular DIY project is worth it for you.
You might know how much you want to spend, but will it match up with your needed materials? In some cases, you may already own some of the items needed, such as a hammer or a screwdriver, but you may need to purchase items, too. Having a materials list can help you sit down and estimate the overall cost of a project. In some cases, you may find it will be cheaper to buy a completed piece of furniture rather than building it yourself.
At this point, you are likely aware of what types of projects you’re willing to tackle, and what types you aren’t. The reality is that most people are entirely capable of building basic pieces of furniture; they just don’t always have the time, the money, or even the desire to do so. Whether you choose to build from scratch or refinish an existing piece, you will find that DIY furniture is a fulfilling and meaningful way to create a custom look in your home.
