Three Ways To Make You House Picture-Perfect Before A Showing

When showing a house, the details matter, but probably not the details you think. You can draw attention away from a slightly out of date kitchen by making it sparkling clean and adding a huge vase of flowers. A magnitude of issues can be greatly improved by getting rid of clutter and keeping things as clean as possible. Fresh paint is always the best idea, but sometimes impractical. If it can’t happen, that’s okay, but you’ll have to put the work in elsewhere.

Three Ways To Make You House Picture-Perfect Before A Showing

  •  Clean the windows
  •  Scrub the sink to a shine
  •  Buff, polish, or shine the floors

Nothing will turn someone off as much as walking up to a house full of fingerprints, smudges, cobwebs, etc. If your windows are truly grimy, you will need wash them first with dish detergent and water – scrub them clean, wipe them dry with a microfiber cloth, and then go about the business of shining your windows to a gleaming finish. You can use a commercial window washer or a combination of 1:1 white vinegar and water, and use a microfiber or paper towels to buff your windows to a finish. Then, keep up the appearance by wiping up smudges up every few days.

Sinks can either make or break a house tour – if it is grimy, full of soap scum, or worse- old bits of food, people will make a run for the hills. There are two issues with cleaning a sink: the way it looks and the way it smells. Nobody wants to smell a foul sink, but it’s easy to remedy. If you don’t like to use harsh chemicals, and you don’t have a garbage disposal, cut a lemon in half and squeeze it into the sink. If you have a garbage disposal, put some lemon or orange rinds through the garbage disposal. If you’re not opposed to bleach, a half cup of straight bleach down the sink can kill all the bacteria and freshen things up. If it is a stainless steel sink, you can scour it with scouring pad and some scour cleanser, and then shine to a finish with some window cleaner.

Whatever your floors are made of, it should be a priority to get them cleaned to a shine. First sweep them, including along the walls (where dust like to cluster). Then damp mop with a cleanser that is safe for your floor, and you can also rent a buffer if your floor is hard word. This will buff it to a gleam, which will make your house seem bigger than it actually is, and draw the buyer’s eye away from any imperfections. If you can’t do that, use a floor-shine product that is safe for your floor, and give it plenty of time to dry, with nobody walking across it (not even animals!) just hours before your home is to be shown.
