Three Ways To Volunteer In Your Community

Three Ways To Volunteer In Your Community

Most people wish that they were able to contribute more to the community that they live in, either through donations or volunteer work. Both are noble, worthy ways to contribute to causes you believe in and help others in need. If you donate money, it’s always a good idea to go online and research to see how much of the money you donate actually goes to those in need in your community. Most charities have financial reports that are required by law to be available to the public, so you will know if the Charity of your choice is utilizing their donations in a way you feel good about. If, however, you would rather donate your time, most communities have ways that you can do that by sharing any specific talents you may have, or just by good old-fashioned labor. Remember that many organizations need a secretary, treasurer, and other non-physical type position to be filled as well!

Three Ways To Volunteer In Your Community

  • At the Fire Department, Rescue Squad, or Hospital
  • At The Local Animal Shelter
  • As a coach/leader for children’s sports, scout groups, camps

Many towns have a local Fire Department and Rescue Squad that is at least partially volunteer. Some are fully volunteer, so that means that people who call 911 are dependent on volunteers to respond to their medical or fire emergency. There are often volunteers in hospitals as well – some are specific things, like rocking babies or sitting with elderly people who have no family. The caveat with most of these volunteer opportunities is that they require a lot of training, but also provide you with unbelievable skills, opportunities to touch lives, and form relationships with others. This can be time-intensive, but also be sure to check out other needs they have (Board of Director, treasurer, secretary – generally once a month). You’ll be a better person for just visiting your local volunteer station, hearing their stories and being able to connect with your community. If in doubt, the fire chief, rescue chief or President are goof people to contact.

If you have a local humane society/ animal rescue, there is likely an opportunity for you to volunteer. The animals need walked/interacted with, their stalls need mucked, visits with prospective adoptive families need evaluation. The work is not glamorous, but if you are an animal lover, could prove to be just what your soul needs.

Have you had children in junior league football, softball, soccer or Boys or Girl Scouts Troops? You know they always need help, and these opportunities are not limited just to parents – many childless individuals choose to dedicate their volunteer services here. You never know when your influence may touch a young soul – and how much that soul may need it.
