Three Alternatives To Candy For Trick Or Treating

Three Alternatives To Candy For Trick Or Treating

As the end of summer nears, our thoughts turn toward the fun things associated with fall – crisp mornings, falling leaves, hayrides, bonfires, football games, and Trick Or Treating! If you are like many people, you enjoy seeing children in their Halloween costumes and being able to give them a treat. It is a fun time to get to know the people in your neighborhood if you are new, or a fun time to reconnect and visit with neighbors if you already know them. As our society evolves, however, Trick Or Treating has become a little more challenging. Food allergies are on the rise, making many children allergic to whey, casein, peanuts and even chocolate. Many parents avoid red dye in the diets of their children due to sensitivity issues as well.  To add to all of this, we also have children with Type 1 Diabetes, and more children than ever who are overweight and avoiding sweets as part of a heart-healthy diet. It definitely puts would-be candy givers at a disadvantage – how can we be inclusive of all people who are coming to Trick or Treat? Fortunately, treats don’t have to be traditional sugary candy! Read on for ideas about how to give treats that all children can enjoy.

Three Alternatives To Candy For Trick Or Treating

  • Glow Sticks
  • Stickers
  • Temporary Tattoos

Unfortunately, Trick or Treating carries the risk of being hit by a vehicle – it’s one of the most dangerous nights of the year for tots! One of the ways to combat this is to walk in groups, carry flashlights, but what about glow sticks, glow bracelets, and glow necklaces? Children love them, and they last for several days, displaying their neon yellow, blue, orange, green or pink hue for hours of enjoyment. They are fun, entertaining and can help save a life! Double score!

Stickers are always a win. Some children collect them, and almost all enjoy them. They don’t have to be Halloween-themed. Try getting different types – sports stickers, scratch n’ sniff, emoji stickers, and letting each child choose a sheet of stickers when they come to your door. They can decorate their school folders with them and enjoy them all year round!

Temporary tattoos are very popular with children. Easy to apply with just water, they last for about a week and can be washed off if necessary before then. Go with neutral themes – animals, rainbows, suns, moons, flowers, lightning – all are popular and unlikely to offend. Let each child choose their temporary tattoo when they show up.

Candy is fun, but other goodies can be just as fun! These ideas are a way to include everyone.
