Three Tips for Cleaning Your Windows

Three Tips for Cleaning Your Windows

Most people know that beautiful, clean windows are key to both photographing and showing your home – it is a major element for curbside appeal. The task can seem daunting, though, particularly if you face specific challenges, such as very high windows, a house in the middle of pine trees, or a home near a road where frequent salt trucks fly by. Remember that while animals and children (and others) may smudge the inside of your windows, the outside of your windows is what really takes the beating when it comes to weather and wildlife. Nesting activities and spiders can wreak havoc and may require special attention by you. The most important thing is – don’t ignore your windows! It may seem like a daunting task, but the longer you put this off, the worse your windows will become.

Three Tips for Cleaning Your Windows

  • Do this chore on a dry, cloudy day
  • Remove dirt and dust first
  • Use Cleaner and a Microfiber cloth

If you pick an extremely sunny day, or especially a very hot sunny day, you’ll have the problem of soap drying on windows before you get it washed off, and this will lead to  lot of annoyance and streaking. Likewise, if it’s extremely windy, it may be unsafe for you to stand on a ladder (always use a spotter!) and if it is raining, you will be unable to achieve a streak free shine. A cloudy day in spring or fall are the best times to complete this chore.

A bucket of warm soapy water and a soft scrub brush (dish detergent may be best) is needed for the nest part. Remove as much dry debris as possible – stuck on bird poop, for example. Then gently scrub your windows with the soapy water, changing it out as often as necessary. You can then spray your window down with clean water and let it air dry. Streaks don’t matter at this point – right now it is about getting the window clean. Streaks will be addressed in the final step.

Finally, choose a cleaner – a commercial window cleaner, or a mixture of vinegar and water, whatever you feel is appropriate – and make sure you spray a liberal amount from a spray bottle. You then want to use a microfiber cloth to buff your windows to a streak free shine. Because your windows are clean, you should only have to change the cloth if it becomes extremely damp. Your windows will be gorgeous in no time!
