Organizing An Outside Shed

Organizing An Outside Shed

Outside sheds are wonderful for storage and convenience, but only if they are working for you, and not against you when it comes to accessing them.

Sheds should house home improvement, landscaping items, tools, and gardening equipment, but those things can become bulky and can easily cause a shed to become cluttered.

The addition of floating shelves can be added to any available wall space in your shed. Adjustable shelves are also a great idea because they can be moved to accommodate larger objects.

Freestanding metal shelving units are practical and stand the test of time, and are great for storing smaller to moderate-sized items or similarly-themed items (such as pool supplies).

If you are into repurposing, you can stack wooden crates to also compartmentalize and add a woodsy look to your shed.

An old wooden bookshelf is a great way to store garden tools like trowels and watering cans while giving a charming look.

Plastic storage containers can be very economical and practical when you are storing things that you don’t wish to become damp. This could be things with cords, electric wires, etc. Make sure you label the front of the plastic tote so that you can easily identify what is needed without having to open every tote.

Tool hangers can hold rakes, brooms, pruners and other big, unwieldy or dangerous items out of the way. You can make your own or buy them at home improvement stores.

You are far more likely to work in your yard or your garden if you can find your tools easily and quickly. Each season you should inspect your shed, tools, and throw away or donate things that are no longer needed.

Be sure to check for pest invasions such as mice and snakes. Avoid storing pet food in your shed unless it is in an airtight container with a lid. Termites can destroy a shed even more quickly than a home, so be careful about the storage of garden hoses that bring moisture into the shed.

If you have nails and screws and other tools, regular mason jars with lids are great storage containers that are safe and see-through for easy identification. Place these in the bookshelf for easy accessibility.

Wooden pallets can be stored backward and upright for a large garden tool holder or post hole digger holder, shovels, and other tools that don’t have a place.

A little creativity can get your shed cleaned up in no time!
