Spring Maintenance For Your Dubois County Home

Spring Maintenance For Your Dubois County Home

Ah, Spring. The weather is warmer, the birds are chirping, and you suddenly realize there’s a lot of things you need to do to 1) recover your home from winter and 2) prepare it for summer.

The first thing you should do is to take a visual inspection of your exterior home. Have winter winds displaced shingles on your roof or loosened any siding or gutters? These should be repaired. While we are on the topic of gutters, this is the time to clear yours. Much can accumulate from the fall by way of leaves and small twigs, so remove these things and then adequately flush your gutters with a garden hose, making sure to pay attention to what happens with your downspouts.

Water should flow freely away from your house. No matter how much rain you get, you should never have standing water near your home for more than 24 hours afterwards. This is a sign of poor drainage, and can seriously harm the foundation of your home, not to mention summon pesky unwanted guests like termites and mosquitoes. If you seem to be having a drainage problem, the first thing is to make sure your downspouts are working properly. If they are, you may need to grade your yard a bit to help with run off. This can usually be done with lower-cost rentals and a bit of ingenuity.

It’s also time to check your trees. Are they all alive? Dead trees run the risk of falling during a severe storm which are common in late spring. You’ll want to cut these trees down immediately and have the wood hauled away from your home.

Make sure none of your trees are growing into your power or telephone lines, and arrange for them to be trimmed if they are. Also make sure that no roots are growing into your foundation. This situation is a bit trickier and will require an expert, but it’s well worth the price you will pay now as compared to the price you will pay later.

Have you removed all dead plants from last autumn? Carefully pull or cut them so new growth can happen. This instantly gives your home a fresh look as well.
If you still have leaves lying around, you can either rake them up or mulch them with a mower the first time you mow. This will allow even grass growth and get your yard off to a good start.

Finally, does your siding need to be pressure washed? Do your door need to be painted? A few easy cleaning projects go a long way to make your home Spring-ready.
