Deep Clean Your House For Spring
With spring comes fresh air, warm breezes, and the ability to open windows. It also means it may be time to take a look at all the cleaning that hasn’t taken place over the winter – particularly if you’re getting ready to sell your home.
The first step is decluttering your home. Donate things that are in good shape, including clothes you haven’t worn in a year. Throw out all old papers, magazines, broken toys, broken furniture, old toiletries, etc. it’s much easier to clean when you aren’t working around clutter.
Next, start from the ceiling down. Anything you dust will fall on the floor, so save that until last. Clean all ceiling fans with a damp cloth, and wipe down walls and ceilings if your wall texture permits. Take down draperies and curtains and either launder then yourself or have them dry-cleaned. Then it’s time to wash windows thoroughly, outside and in. Move furniture and wipe down baseboard. Vacuum behind and underneath furniture and then vacuum the furniture itself. Dust all surfaces. Finally, you can begin to clean the floor. Use whatever cleaning solution is safe for your type of flooring and allow to dry naturally. Next, replace curtains and arrange furniture in a new way for a new look.
In the bedroom, follow the same steps except also take care to wash the bedding – many comforters and duvets will require dry cleaning.
In the kitchen, remove all pots and pans and use a weak bleach solution to clean your drawers and cabinets. Inspect all of your dish ware to be sure they are clean. Allow to dry and then replace.
In the bathroom, launder the shower curtain and bath mat. Allow to dry in the sun. Clean the bathtub thoroughly as well as the toilet, sink, and vanity. Next, sweep thoroughly and scrub the grouting as well as cleaning the floor. Then you can rehang your shower curtain and rug.
It’s usually easier to clean one room a day, but if you have help or are particularly energetic, a whole house can be cleaned in one day. If you have the time, don’t neglect your front porch, sweep it well and scrub it with soap and water, then place a pretty spring mat at your doorway. If you are able, a nice spring wreath on your day may also be a welcome touch. The sooner you do these things in the season, the fresher your home will feel for you to enjoy.
