5 Reasons to Live in the Countryside
If you’re house-hunting, consider a home in the countryside. There are many advantages to a rural residence, provided you have easy access to shops and culture, too. Consider these five plus-points with the long-term future in mind.
- Peace and space
Rolling, open landscape offers space to move and think, promoting physical and mental health for you and all the family. Visiting friends will love your peaceful, nature-rich setting as much as you do, and if you have children or dogs, they’ll be in their element with the meadows and woods to enjoy. A rural environment will encourage you to take exercise, too. Depending on the terrain, it could open up opportunities for climbing, skiing or other sports and recreations, while the quiet roads will be ideal for jogging.
- Pure air
With an out-of-town home, you and your family will escape the city fumes and all the health risks they carry. By contrast, the pure, fresh air of the countryside will benefit brain and body alike; it may even feel softer on your lungs. You’ll notice sweet, natural fragrances, too, and at night the stars will shine out in the smog-free sky.
- Community spirit
Village life has lots to offer. You’re sure to find some small-scale activities for you and your family to join in. Perhaps you’d like to set up one of your own, too. As you get to know the local people, you’ll soon feel part of the community. On the other hand, with all that space between the houses, you can easily keep your privacy if you prefer.
- Extension potential
A rural property in an open area will offer great opportunities for expansion. If you can’t afford a large house yet, but anticipate doing so later, you could buy a small place with potential for an extension when you’re ready. This is a great idea if you’re planning a family or looking ahead to a time when you may need to house an elderly relative. If you’re interested in a certain property, and its adjacent land, check for any purchasing or building plans that could mar yours before going ahead with the purchase.
- Financial value
Property prices vary in rural areas, just as they do in cities, but you’re likely to get more space for your money out of town. A large property in need of decoration may cost less than a small, glamorous one. Properties also tend to cost less in relation to distance from the nearest city, so if you’re happy to live far out, you’ll have more affordable homes to choose from. A place in the country is an increasingly popular option for home buyers, so if you want to sell your property a few years down the line, you should have no problem finding a buyer.
If you’re not sure about living out in the wilds, try a few tasters. Visit your favourite areas, staying over to get a feel of the place. Take a stroll, chat to the locals and drink in the atmosphere. Ask your out-of-town friends how they like country life, or go online and browse the chat rooms for feedback comments.
Once you find a property that ticks the boxes and feels right, you’ll know you’ve found home. If it’s out in the wilderness, you can bellow “Hurrah!” to the birds.
