Three Ways To Make Your Rooms Seem Larger Than They Are
Whether you are trying to sell a home or just enjoy living there, chances are you like the feel of a lot of space, a certain wide open air that makes you feel free. There’s a reason for that on multiple levels – physically, it’s programmed into humans to know that they can easily leave a space if they need to, and emotionally, it’s been proven than people fight less and are happier when things are less crowded, probably because they have room to move and room to breathe in a physical and metaphorical sense. But, let’s face it, not all of us can afford homes as big as we would like. This isn’t the end of the world – it may just mean it’s time for some creativity.
Three Ways To Make Your Rooms Seem Larger Than They Are
- Paint your rooms a light or pastel color that reflects light
- Get rid of clutter
- Minimize furniture to essential pieces
Painting your rooms a light or pastel color that reflects light is a way to capitalize on natural sunlight. Pick beiges, light yellows, airy peaches, anything that is pastel and light. While you’re at it, keep the window coverings to a minimum – the more light you have shining through the windows, the more space you will seem to have – even better if the weather is conducive to actually opening a window.
Get rid of all clutter. At the very least, there should be nothing laying on your floor. No piles of clothing, no magazines, nothing. Everything should have a place to call home that is up and off the floor. That means you need to minimize knick-knacks and avoid big space hogs like stuffed animals and decorative furniture that is never used.
In fact, you should minimize furniture to only essential pieces. In your bedroom, it’s perfectly acceptable to have nothing more than a bed, a nightstand, and a dresser. The current trends of trying to shove a chair and ottoman in bedrooms that don’t have the space, don’t give the feeling of luxury – they give the feeling of being cramped, and that’s not a restful situation! Get rid of your extra furniture and watch your mood improve. Afraid you’ll have guests over and nowhere for them to sit? Buy some beautiful Asian floor pillows and store them in the closet and bring them out if needed.
