How To Spray Paint Outdoor Metal Furniture

There are few things more fun and satisfying than turning an old, rusty set of furniture into a beautiful set for your front porch or garden. Even better if it’s just a few dollars to complete! First you need to decide if the condition of your furniture is salvageable. Rust in general is salvageable, but rust to the point that the metal has been eaten through is probably not safe and may be able to be recycled at a metal recycling center. If it’s just dull paint and a few brown spots of rust, it should be fine.

How To Spray Paint Outdoor Metal Furniture

  • Rub rusted and flaking parts with a metal brush to s smooth finish
  • Choose a color of outdoor spray paint
  • Get blocks or four by fours to place furniture pieces on with a backdrop under them
  • Spray pieces evenly
  • Allow to dry thoroughly

A metal sanding brush can be purchased at most hardware stores. Make sure you wear protective eyewear to avoid pieces of metal or paint flying into your eyes. Don’t rub too hard, which will make the surfaces uneven. It may not be perfect, but that’s part of the beauty of repurposing- particularly if you’re going for a shabby chic look.

Choose a color of spray paint that goes well with your patio, garden, porch or deck. Popular choices are white, black, gold, silver, bronze and red, but any color will work as long as it ties in with your overall theme. If your overall deck is neutral, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color – maybe a small turquoise table and chair would add a lot of enchantment! Have fun.

Make sure you set the furniture up on blocks and under a drop cloth as you work. This takes care of two issues – you don’t spray paint the ground, and you are able to get to the underside of the furniture more easily, including the legs of the furniture.

Spray pieces evenly with up and down strokes. This may take a little practice, but spray paint is forgiving. Have a few “oops” cloths ready in case you spray to much and paint starts to pool or run. After the first coat, you may decide you need another coat. Always follow directions on the paint can and paint in a well ventilated area (outdoors is preferable to indoors, and wearing a mask is a good idea so you don’t inhale paint fumes.)

Let the pieces dry for longer than you think is necessary. Some areas (such as underneath) may take a bit longer than others. When you are satisfied that they are dry, remove them from their blocks, arrange on your porch, and admire your handiwork!
