How To Decorate a Small Bedroom

How To Decorate a Small Bedroom

How To Decorate a Small BedroomSmaller bedrooms can create a unique challenge in that you have less space and fewer options for where to put stuff. However, there are many ways you can decorate a small room to make the most of its inherent coziness or make it appear bigger if you wish.

Illusions of Grandeur

Making a small room appear larger can be achieved in several ways. One easy method is to use mirrors. A few small mirrors can give a window-like impression which opens up an otherwise claustrophobic space. Alternatively, using one large mirror can make the room appear to double in size.

Also, while there may not be as much space to put things in a smaller room, bedrooms come with many sneaky nooks you can put things out of sight to stop it looking too cluttered. Under-bed storage drawers can be used as extra space for clothes or anything else you need to put away, and using vacuum-sealed bags like the ones you see on shopping channels further maximize the space under there. It’s also a good idea to make the most of wall space with shelving, so you can leave as much room as possible for the bed, closet and other pieces.

When putting up curtains, it’s also a good idea to buy them extra-large and give extra space above the top of the window itself. Combined with a slightly oversized curtain pole, the illusion of a bigger window can be achieved.

Embracing It

Alternatively, you can embrace the intimacy of a small bedroom by decorating with rich colors such as purples and reds. While white is a common choice for small bedrooms, without clever decorating (e.g., mirrors and well-chosen bedspreads and curtains), it’s easy for a small bedroom to look bland and even cell-like. Using a limited palette of colors makes a small room appear more uniform, and is easier on the eye in any sized room.

Many interior designers also recommend using large furniture, such as a four-poster bed, in order to trick the mind into thinking a room is big. Multi-use furniture such as desk-dressers or a captain’s bed are another smart way to make the most of smaller spaces.

Lighting is also important, regardless of your color and furniture choices. By placing softly lit lamps in different locations, as well as a low-wattage bulb in your ceiling light, the edges of the room will blur and small dimensions will become less obvious.

By making the most of color and smart furniture choices, even the smallest of bedrooms can become beautiful spaces you’ll want to spend time in. Lighting, mirrors and other illusions can help a room feel bigger, while embracing the size of the room with rich colors, as well as tricking the eye with large furniture, are several options for those looking to decorate a smaller sleeping space.
