Dress up your Curtains with Drapery Bling

Have you ever noticed that draperies and curtains always seem to have that ‘something’s missing’ look to them? Maybe they just need a little ‘bling’. Here’s a quick and simple do-it-yourself idea that will take your drapes (or curtains) from blah to aah.

This is an easy and pretty home décor idea that you can do in an evening while watching television. When this project is complete, you will have draperies that sparkle.

It doesn’t take a lot of material for this dripping beads project and you may even have everything you need on hand right now.

Materials Needed:

Large and medium sized beads
Cord, string, ribbon or string

Chances are you probably have some large beads around that you have been hanging onto. You can even take apart those necklaces with the big beads hanging in your jewelry box that are no longer trendy. You say you are going to wear them, but let’s face it, you won’t. Another option is to visit a nearby thrift store, where you can almost always find inexpensive beaded necklaces and bracelets. Just be sure you have a variety of bead sizes for the project.

Then find some strong cord, string, ribbon, yarn, etc. There’s got to be something around that you can use (whatever you have on hand will work). Make sure, though, that whatever you use is strong enough to hold heavy beads and will not weaken due to temperature changes coming through the windows. A light string or thread could weaken over time if your window gets a lot of strong sunlight. You don’t want to be picking beads up off of the floor any time in the future. Try to find something in a color that will complement the color of your drapes or curtains. Perhaps you have something in a darker or lighter shade than the color of your drapes. It doesn’t actually even have to be matching colors as long as it’s something that you like.

Now pick out the beads that you want to use keeping in mind that you do want your dripping beads to stand out and not blend in with the drapery. It will help to lay them out in a row to give you an idea of what they will look like together. For more of a designer look, you can match your beads to the cord, ribbon, string, etc.

Cut the cord into different lengths. This is what will give them the ‘dripping’ look. String the beads, mixing some medium size beads in between the large ones. Then tie knots in between the beads or sections of beads. This will help to spread the beads out and keep them where you want them to stay. Be sure to hang a large bead at the end to ensure that your dripping beads hang straight. The dripping beads can be hand sewn directly onto the tops of your drapes, or you can use snaps so that they will be easy to remove.

Now, stand back and admire what you’ve just created!
