Downtown Evansville Real EstateWhen most people think of Evansville, Indiana, they picture the beautiful buildings along the skyline, the Riverfront area and its richly diverse culture.

What many people overlook, though, is Evansville’s major role in history and its spectacular historic landmarks.

Downtown Evansville’s Most Historic Places

What makes downtown Evansville so special is its eclectic mix of modern style and deep, longstanding roots in early American history.

Some of the most notable historic landmarks in Evansville include:

3. Citizens National Bank Historic Landmark - Evansville, IN Real EstateCitizens National Bank

Opened in 1916, the Citizens National Bank (now known as Kunkel Square) was the region’s first skyscraper. While it once held offices designed by renowned 20th-century architect William Lee Stoddart, it’s now used as an apartment building in the heart of Evansville.

3. Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse Historic Sites in Indiana - Evansville Real EstateThe Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse

It took two years to build the Old Courthouse; construction lasted from 1888 to 1890. It cost a whopping $379,450 to build (that would equal about $76 million today). The bell inside the Old Courthouse has been tolling since 1890 and continues to this day. The best part? It’s open to the public and you can visit its historic halls any time during normal business hours.

3. Historic Places in Evansville - Evansville, IN Real EstateVictory Theatre

This stunning 1,950-seat theatre in Evansville is the central hub for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and several local play, ballet and dance companies – a far cry from when it hosted vaudeville acts and Evansville’s first “talkie,” a Warner Brothers movie featuring a scantily clad Dolores Costello.

Homes are sprinkled throughout the downtown area, and many of them are historic as well. From West Iowa Street to Wabash Street, you’ll find immaculately preserved homes in Evansville that date back to our earliest days as a thriving Southern Indiana hub.

Evansville was founded in 1812, although it was occupied thousands of years prior by natives. The Angel Mounds State Historic Site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, and it’s just 8 miles outside of Evansville; archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation as far back as prehistoric times.
