Tip #1: Check Your Dog’s Microchip and ID Tags

Before you start packing, update your dog’s microchip information and ID tags with your new address. Make sure your phone number is current, too. That’ll be one less thing to worry about once you’re in your new home.

Tip #2: Stick to Your Routine

Your dog can sense that something big is happening, and that can cause more than a little stress. That means sticking to routines is more important now than ever. Dogs thrive on knowing what to expect, so you can make your four-legged family member’s time easier if you keep doing what they’re used to doing.

Tip #3: Get Plenty of Exercise Together

Exercise is a natural stress-buster (for you and your dog), so take extra time to walk and play. You’ll find that your pooch is better-able to handle the move when you’re both getting plenty of exercise.

Tip #4: Walk Around Your New Neighborhood

Start getting your dog used to the new sights, sounds and smells of your next neighborhood by taking long walks there as soon as you know for sure that’s where you’ll be moving. Your dog will appreciate the familiarity you’re building – and familiarization make it easier for your dog to find their way back to you in the event of an escape.

Tip #5: Work on Brain Training

Stressed dogs need to exercise their brains, too. Now may be a great time to invest in some brain-teasing puzzles (like those that release treats after the dog figures out the puzzle). You can also play games like “Find It,” where you hide treats all over the house and encourage your pooch to sniff them out.

Tip #6: Give Your Dog a Safe Space in Both Homes

Dogs like to have a place they can call their own, so provide a safe space where they can go without being harassed or bothered by the sound of packing tape, the tossing of boxes and other packing-related issues.

Tip #7: Send Your Dog to a Sitter on Moving Day

Moving day is very stressful for dogs because there are lots of strangers going in and out. Your dog will be safest – and probably happiest – if you send them to a sitter for the big day. Remember: Movers will leave your front door open for hours, and that provides an easy way for your pup to escape.

Tip #8: Go for a Long Walk Before You Go Into Your New House

After all the boxes are in and the pizza is on its way, take your dog for a long stroll around the neighborhood before you enter your new house. This will give your dog a little time to relax, and it’ll help them be more open to exploring the new space calmly.

Tip #9: Let Your Dog Explore at Their Leisure

Once you’re inside, don’t rush your dog – let them explore at their own pace. You might choose to close off some rooms if your dog is easily overwhelmed. Just make sure they have easy access to food and fresh water, as well as their kennel if it’s one of their favorite places.
