Three Home Improvements That Are Perfect For Winter

Three Home Improvements That Are Perfect For Winter

Most people don’t think of winter as a time to tackle home improvements, but studies shows that building materials and home improvement tools are about 50% cheaper from November to March! Sure, there are some projects that may need to wait for spring, but not many…particularly those inside of the house. Besides, many people decide to list their houses for sale in the spring, so winter is a great time to get busy on home improvement projects! If you’re still not convinced, consider the fact that if you do a majority of home improvements in the winter, it will free up your time off in the warmer months to get out and enjoy other hobbies!

Three Home Improvements That Are Perfect For Winter

  • Paint
  • Get Your Yard Ready For Spring
  • Replace door and cabinet hardware

Now is a good time to paint anything! Just about anything that’s old and in need of a refresh can be painted – cabinets, paneling, walls, ceilings, even your garage floor! Paint is typically cheapest from late fall to late winter, and if you care for your painting equipment properly, it will see you through several projects. Low-odor paint really is low-odor, but it doesn’t hurt to crack a window, either. Just make sure the house doesn’t become frigid. You can paint furniture outside or in the garage. If you don’t have the money to replace something, it doesn’t hurt to try to give it a coat of paint to see if it greatly improves the looks of your home. Studies show you’re going to be inside about 40% more than during any other season, so you may as well be doing something useful!

Contrary to popular belief, there’s a lot you can do to your yard in the late fall and winter to make it ready for a beautiful spring. If your grass is high, mow it one last time – it will mulch up any dead leaves and remove hiding places for destructive critters like mice. Make sure you remove all piles of leaves, fallen limbs, wood, etc…if these lay in your yard all winter, you will have bare patches of grass next spring! If you have a wood burning fireplace, consider it free fuel. If you have any dead trees, pull them out of the ground in the winter and pack the ground with sod or dirt. This will ensure the trees don’t come down during an ice storm and that you don’t fall into a hole while your yard is covered in snow!

Most people have no idea how much new locks, cabinet pulls and hardware can spruce up the looks of your home, not to mention make your home safer. It’s completely possible to change all locks and doorknobs within one day! You could also replace sink faucets and other hardware in your bathroom, your vanity mirror, or replace an old ceiling fan. The snow may be falling outside, but you have plenty to do indoors.
